Master drum maker Peter Pictou, a Mi’kmaw Elder from Yarmouth, will guide a small group to make their own drum. When asked, Peter describes this kind of drum as a “Healing Drum”.
“Throughout history the drum has been an important instrument made with the intention of having something sacred to use for personal enjoyment, healing, ceremony and communication.” When you put your energy into the making of your drum part of your spirit connects with the natural elements.
All materials will be provided to make a 15 inch drum. The hides are sustainably harvested in Nova Scotia and Elders make the cedar frames.
If people are interested in a handmade drum or a rattle and are unable to attend the workshop, Peter will bring some that he has made. Drums $300, dyed drums $340, rattles $50
